What is application management?

What do application administrators do?

Application administrators are IT professionals who are responsible for managing the software applications within a company. They review which specific applications are needed to improve business operations and oversee the installation, upgrading and day-to-day maintenance of application software.


Originally, app management mainly related to the technical development phase of software. Nowadays, the functional management also ends up with the app manager, which is how the term 'functional application management' came into being. The work differs per company, there is not (yet) a well-defined profile. Larger organizations increasingly fill in functional and technical management separately.

They identify and analyze deficiencies and report them to the technical application manager.


Interpersonal skills are very important. You must be able to communicate effectively with users and suppliers about functionalities and performance. Projects are usually carried out in groups, so you must be able to function well within a team. You must be flexible and be able to prioritize and execute tasks.

What does a technical application manager do?

Technical application management revolves around software design, development, testing and implementation. You program and add new functionalities. Extensive technical knowledge is therefore necessary here. A decade ago, companies mainly performed technical app management themselves, in an internal department (on-premise), on the computer of the (end) user. Today, many companies engage technical application managers (outsourcing).


The software is managed externally, in the cloud by the supplier on a subscription basis (Software as a Service, SaaS). Tight project management, a thorough testing process and knowledge transfer between internal employees and external developers is therefore of the utmost importance.


How do you become an application manager?

An IT-related education is necessary, most vacancies require a bachelor's or master's degree, but you can also make a good start with an associate degree.
